Three and a Half Years

Rev. 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

11:11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.

(In the book The Great Controversy Sister White has just quoted Revelation 11:2-11 then she goes on to say….)  The periods here mentioned--"forty and two months," and "a thousand two hundred and threescore days"--are the same, alike representing the time in which the church of Christ was to suffer oppression from Rome. The 1260 years of papal supremacy began in A.D. 538, and would therefore terminate in 1798. {GC 266.3}  The Bible and the French Revolution

Rev. 11:11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.

God's faithful witnesses, slain by the blasphemous power that “ascendeth out of the bottomless pit,” were not long to remain silent. “After three days and a half, the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.” [Revelation 11:11.] It was in 1793 that the decree which prohibited the Bible passed the French Assembly. Three years and a half later a resolution rescinding the decree, and granting toleration to the Scriptures, was adopted by the same body….{GC88 286.1} (Bio EG White V.6 p. 315)

Verse 11 is also a year for a day prophecy then she goes on to say………..

Let all who would understand the meaning of these things read the eleventh chapter of Revelation. Read every verse, and learn the things that are yet to take place in the cities….--MR 1518 (May 10, 1906).  {LDE 95.4 Last day Events}

To read every verse includes the time periods in verses 2, 3, and 11. This prophecy has a past and, a yet to take place, future application. The time either becomes literal months and days or we have another 1260 years before the second coming. The scriptures are all too plain showing His coming is very near to think it’s a thousand years away.

The forty and Two Months in Rev. 13:5

Rev. 13:5   And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

 "Power was given unto him to continue forty and two months." (Verse 5) And, says the prophet, "I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death." (Verse 3) And again, "He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity; he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword." (Verse 10) The forty and two months are the same as the "time and times and the dividing of time," three years and a half, or 1260 days, of Daniel 7,--the time during which the papal power was to oppress God's people. This period, as stated in preceding chapters, began with the establishment of the papacy, A. D. 538, and terminated in 1798. At that time, when the papacy was abolished and the pope made captive by the French army, the papal power received its deadly wound, and the prediction was fulfilled, "He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity." (Verse 10) {GC88 439.2}

In the Spirit of Prophecy the 42 months in verse 5 is before verse 3, before the deadly wound in 1798, putting the 42 months before 1798. Rev. 13 is undoubted a prophecy through out the Dark Ages. But reading it from the Bible the 42 months comes after the healing of the deadly wound putting the 42 months in the future confirmed by the following quote.

The Sabbath question will be the issue in the great conflict in which all the world will act a part. [Rev. 13:4-10 quoted.] This entire chapter is a revelation of what will surely take place [Rev. 13:11, 15-17 quoted] (MS 88, 1897).  {7BC 979.10}

 "It is for the interest of all to understand what the mark of the beast is, and how they may escape the dread threatening’s of God. Why are men not interested to know what constitutes the mark of the beast? Ex. 31:12-17. The Sabbath question will be the issue in the great conflict in which all the world will act a part. Rev. 13:4-17.  {RH, April 27, 1911 par. 3}

Quoting Rev. 13:4-17 but I’ve added verse 3 for contrast, its part of the entire chapter; Rev. 13 is now an end time prophecy.

Rev. 13:3   And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; (1798) and his deadly wound was healed: (NSL) and all the world wondered after the beast.

13:4   And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

13:5   And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

Verse 5 the forty and two months is also included; this is a past and future prophecy. The previous quote is repeated adding Ex. 31:12-17, I’ve left out some of the verses to save space. The forty and two months are now literal and because the Sunday issue hasn’t taken place, this is yet in the future.

Exodus 31:13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my Sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.

 31:14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

 31:15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

The following two quotes in the box plus the two quotes in the boxes above are the quotes that put Revelation 13:5 and Daniel 7:25 in the future; all including v. 5 the “forty and two months”. Some of the quotes are saying the same thing while giving different reference points in and out of the chapter.

 The Sabbath question will be the issue in the great conflict in which all the world will act a part. [Rev. 13:4-8, quoted]  {19MR 182.4}

She quotes [Rev. 13:10] then says. This entire chapter is a revelation of what will surely take place.

[Rev. 13:11, 15-17, quoted]  {19MR 182.6}

The time times and dividing of time

The forty and two months are the same as the "time and times and the dividing of time," three years and a half, or 1260 days, of Daniel 7 …. {GC88 439.2}

The forty and two months in Rev. 13:5 is the same as the “time times and dividing of time” in Daniel 7:25, Rev. 13:5 has a prophetic time in the past and literal time in the future.

In the comparison below notice how Revelation 13:5 and Daniel 7:25 compare with each other, reading them in the order they are written they are saying the same thing, using different words, read the top line of each, then the next line of each, to the bottom, notice blasphemies is to think to change times and laws, and the forty and two months and the times time and the dividing of time are the same amount of time, just written differently. Rev. 13:5 and Daniel 7:25 are companion verses; when studying the prophecies it is the companions that give the interpretation, for instance, Rev.17:1… “I will show unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:” The companion verse is in verse 15 … “The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.” Using the same principle with Revelation 13:5 and Daniel 7:25 we see the thinking to change times and laws, is blaspheme.

Rev. 13:5 And there was given unto him (1) a mouth speaking great things (2) and blasphemies; and (3) power was given unto him to continue (4) forty and two months.”

               1.  a mouth speaking great things

                 2. and blasphemies

                   3.  power was given unto him

                     4.  forty and two months

              1.  shall speak great words

                 2.  think to change times and laws

                    3. given into his hand

                      4. a time and times and the dividing of time

Daniel 7:25 And he (1) shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and (2) think to change times and laws: and they shall be (3) given into his hand until (4) a time and times and the dividing of time.

The Time Times and a Half a time

These two time periods; the “a time, and times, and half a time” in Revelation 12:14 and the “a time, times, and an half” in Daniel 12:7 are identical. Nowhere does the SOP mention the times in Rev. 12:14 as literal or prophetic time, but the two are written the same, and that’s what it takes to make it the same. The following quote is putting all of Daniel 4:23, 25, and 32, chapters 7:25 and 12:7 as literal seven years. If this was prophetic time it would be 2520 years, but we know Nebuchadnezzar was out in the field only seven years or seven times. The seven times here would also explain each of the seven times in Leviticus 26 as seven individual years. The famine in Egypt was also 7 years; seven years before and seven years after. Seven times, and seven years, are saying the same thing.

Seven times: The majority of ancient and modern interpreters explain the Aramaic ‘iddan, “time,” here (also in 4:23, 25, 32; chs. 7:25; 12:7) to mean “years.” The original LXX reads “seven years.” Among the earlier expositors supporting this view are Josephus (Antiquities x. 10. 6) Jerome, Rashi, Ibn Ezra, and Jephet. Most modern expositors also agree with this view. (4BC 790)

Daniel 4:23 … “and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him”

Daniel 4:25 … “and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men”

Daniel 4:32 … “and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men…”

Daniel 12:7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

All these times, and seven times, are all seven years. Daniel 7:25 unlike the others is the same as Rev. 13:5 past and future. Now were going to look at Daniel 7:25 along with Rev. 12:14.

Daniel 7:25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Rev. 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

Dan. 7:25   a time and times and the dividing of time

Rev. 12:14 a time, and times, and half a time

The only difference between these two verses, Daniel 7:25 and Rev. 12:14, is “dividing of” and “half a”, we have already seen that Daniel 7:25 is divided between two time periods both past and future. But in Rev. 12:14 it is the “time” that is cut in half, from 360 days to 180 days, 1260 days the same as Dan. 12:7 “a time, times, and an half.” They are not divided between prophetic and literal time, they are literal time only. In my presentation of Daniel 7 and 12 I prove this beyond a shadow of doubt, except for those who wish to doubt. These quotes are written with the understanding these time periods are literal days at the end of time. There are millions of people in different churches and different parts of the world who have never read or heard of the Spirit of Prophecy; to these God in His mercy has shown them through his Bible only the shorter time while we as Seventh-day Adventist with the SOP get to see both sides of the Roman Dark ages of the past and what is yet to come. When the Sunday laws come in and the announcement that the deadly wound is healed people will realize it’s not only time to get right with God and prepare for His soon coming but there is time to do it. Very similar to the 1840’s the gospel message went to the entire world in just a few years then came the great disappointment; the few that were left started the Seventh day Adventist Church. God has a way of purifying His Church and He will do it again. Not by our standard; but by His.

In Revelation chapter 12 there are two time period’s one in verse 6 and the other in verse 14 each is written entirely different from the other; and careful reading shows they are different.

Rev. 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Rev. 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

 Revelation chapter twelve covers the time that God’s Church is under the rule of the Roman Catholic Church in the Dark Ages of the past, and of the future Dark ages to come. In verse 6 the woman fled into the wilderness as though she is on foot giving the impression it is a longer period of time, while the woman in verse 14 is given the wings of a great eagle that she might fly, showing the time is much faster than the woman that fled into the wilderness. The wilderness is a time period, see v. 6.

Rev. 12:6 And the woman (church) fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Rev. 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

     the woman (church) fled into the wilderness

         a thousand two hundred and threescore days …1260 days/years

            the dragon

            the dragon

        the woman (church) flies into the wilderness

      a time, and times, and half a time ……….1260 days

Rev. 12:13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.

Rev. 12:14 And to the woman (Church) were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

Maranatha Chap. 154 - Satan's Groundwork for the Final Conflict

     He shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High; and he shall think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and half a time. Daniel 7:25, R.V.  {Mar 162.1}

“During the Christian dispensation, the great enemy of man's happiness has made the Sabbath of the fourth commandment an object of special attack. Satan says, "I will work at cross purposes with God. I will empower my followers to set aside God's memorial, the seventh-day Sabbath…

  Through my vicegerent, I will exalt myself. The first day will be extolled, and the Protestant world will receive this spurious Sabbath as genuine. Through the nonobservance of the Sabbath that God instituted, I will bring His law into contempt. The words, "A sign between me and you throughout your generations,' I will make to serve on the side of my Sabbath.  {Mar 162.3}

     "Thus the world will become mine. I will be the ruler of the earth, the prince of the world. I will so control the minds under my power that God's Sabbath shall be a special object of contempt. A sign? I will make the observance of the seventh day a sign of disloyalty to the authorities of earth. Human laws will be made so stringent that men and women will not dare to observe the seventh-day Sabbath. For fear of wanting food and clothing, they will join with the world in transgressing God's law. The earth will be wholly under my dominion."  {Mar 162.4}

  The Sabbath will be the great test of loyalty, for it is the point of truth especially controverted. When the final test shall be brought to bear upon men, then the line of distinction will be drawn between those who serve God and those who serve Him not.”  {Mar 162.5}

Revelation 13 is the history of the Roman Church of the past then uniting with the United States in the future to restore modern Babylon. Revelation chapter 17 reveals the Roman Church past present and future, where Revelation 12 reveals God’s true church in the past and future only. Daniel 7 does the same; he gives the history of four great beasts that rise out of the sea, and then repeats it through the four kings that rise up out of the earth at the end of time, an amazing study.

Many are saying that when the Sunday laws come in, probation closes. Probation does not close at the beginning of the Sunday laws.

“When the work of the investigative judgment closes, the destiny of all will have been decided for life or death. Probation is ended a short time before the appearing of the Lord in the clouds of heaven.” ….Revelation 22:11, 12. {CCh 349.2}

There are 7 three and a half year periods

1. During the days of Elijah… 3 ½ literal years

2. Christ’s ministry from His baptism to crucifixion…. 3 ½ literal years

3. The crucifixion to the stoning of Stephen… 3 ½ literal years

4. The destruction of Jerusalem, spring AD 67 to fall AD 70, 3 ½ literal years

5. The papal Dark Ages 538 to 1798… 3 ½ prophetic or 1260 years.

6. The French Revolution 3 ½ literal years

7. From the world Sunday laws to the close of probation is 3 ½ years

Rev. 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. [1260 literal days]

Failure to understand the importance of these last two time prophecies will cause much distress when thinking Christ comes shortly after the Sunday laws are enforced and time goes on and on. I’ve heard people say when the Sunday laws come, “I’m heading for the hills.” We have plenty of council on what to do during the Sunday laws. Read the story of Jonah of what not to do and what he ended up doing. God was with Jonah all the way, we have nothing to fear except that we follow our own course.

  This is not all, there is a lot more to be said….. All is explained in detail in my “Time Prophecy” power point presentation.

There is also the 1260, 1290 and the 1335 of Daniel 12 too big to put in a small article as this.

Daniel 12:12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.

How can a person wait and come to the 1335 days if these days are 1335 years? but to come to the 1335 days which it plainly says is approxamatly 3 years 7 and a quarter months is possiable everone over 21 years old have done that many times over.

 Daniel 12:13 But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.

The prophecies of Daniel along with Daniel himself are to stand in the last days. The prophecy is to stand in the last days, Daniel is to stand in the last day at the resurrection. Days can be few or many, day is only one. The interpertation of prophecy is usually found in the words we normally overlook.

As we see the events taking place around us, the signs predicting the coming of Christ are fast being fulfilling. As it was in the days of Noah and lot [the first 19 chapters in the book of Genesis] the history of those generations are fast being repeated before our very eyes. In the days of Noah it was eating and drinking marrying and giving in marriage. In the days of Lot it was the sodomite’s, in chapters 18 and 19, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and its destruction. The history of these two generations are being repeated, we see other prophecies being repeated as well. Take the time prophecies for instance they too have a duel applications, while most are written with literal understanding some do have a prophetic side. This six page article is by no means all there is to be said concerning this study. Starting with Revelation chapter 11 the French revolution this will to be repeated in the days in which we live, read chapter 15 of “The Great Controversy”.
